The Hubble space telescope will be left for dead with no more repairs being done on the aging hardware. This decision was made as more NASA resources are being directed to manned missions to the Moon and Mars. A future telescope is planned to replace it, but not until 2011. The Hubble telescope is expected to continue to operate for another few years before it dies completely. When that happens, NASA will have to figure out how to get it back to earth before it destroys us ALL! (well, not really)

  1. I can’t help having mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I’m saddened that they’re going to let the Hubble die like that… but on the other, excited about another ‘scope taking its place. I guess we’ll see how it all goes, eh?

  2. Yeah, the biggest issue for me is the reasoning behind these manned missions to the Moon and Mars. I feel like I can’t take the whole thing on face value. It sounds like the Hubble telescope was a bit of a money pit as a whole so it might be better this way, but it’s not clear that the money is being diverted into a worthy cause.
