Beauty and the Geek

My wife was watching Beauty and the Geek on tv the other day and I wandered into the room to see what the fuss was about. It’s actually kinda funny. It’s a reality show where they pair up some hot chicks and some dorky dudes and make them do things they would stereotypically not be very good at. The episode I saw the end of was the first of the season and there was a trivia segment. Each team would pick one of the two (the beauty or the geek) to answer a question. If the beauty answered the question would be something sorta technical or ‘real news’ related, and if the geek answered it would be something pop culture related.

My favorite question was when they showed one of the beauties a picture of a screwdriver and asked her was kind it was. She said, “There’s kinds of screwdrivers?”, and then answered “hand-held”, which I thought was a pretty good guess. The correct answer was “phillips”.

More Than a Feeling

I love Guitar Hero. It is so insanely fun. I’m getting pretty close to a video game guitar virtuoso now. The makers of the game included some of the best guitar rock songs of all time and it totally makes the game. You actually kinda feel like you’re Ozzy’s right-hand man playing “Bark at the Moon”, and I’m always tempted to start growing out my beard when playing “Sharp Dressed Man”. Ok, not really. Also included in the game is one of the greats of guitar rock, “More Than a Feeling” by Boston. That one is Vida’s favorite song to play and I was shocked to find out she had never actually heard the song as played by Boston, or any Boston at all for that matter! How could she have missed out on such a major part of American culture?

Well, Sonos to the rescue. I have a Sonos music network at my house, and I love it very much like I love Guitar Hero. Maybe more, even. With said Sonos system I was able to dial up Boston’s first album and fire the first song, More Than a Feeling, to the stereo where it could be heard in all of its 70’s over the top stadium rock band glory. And glorious it was.

She hasn’t become a fan of Boston, though. She thinks the real version of the song sounds weird since she’s become so accustomed to the cover version that appears on the Guitar Hero game. Well, I guess you can lead a horse to water…

Rhapsody : not so bad

Until recently I had generally followed the Apple/iTunes/Steve Jobs party line and thought of subscription music services as dumb and useless. Apple describes it as ‘renting music’, which surely does sound bad. When I thought about it a little more, though, it started seeming more like cable television. Do you think of cable as ‘renting TV’? Do you expect to be able to keep watching it after you stop paying? You’re essentially just paying for access to content and it’s up to you to decide if its worth it to you to continue paying to maintain that access or not. You’re free to buy last season of Smallville on DVD and own it if you want, and likewise you can still buy CDs even if you also pay for a music subscription.

Rhapsody (and other music services) one up cable tv, though. They provide on-demand access to a pretty large library of all music. Wouldn’t it be great to have on-demand access to any episode of any television show from the last 20 years? That might actually be worth the extortion fees I pay for cable television now!

The Rhapsody library doesn’t have everything but I’ve been impressed with the selection. There’s only been a couple of things I’ve looked for and not found, the most notable being Metallica (of course). There’s likely other notable gaps in the offering as well but there’s enough to keep me interested for now.

They’ve done a pretty good job of organizing the catalog to make it easier to find new music you might like. They have a pretty good two level genre categorization (main genres and subgrenes) with key artists for each level giving you an overview of what’s in there. They also have charts (top tracks, top albums, top artists) for each genre and artist so you can see what other people are listening to. That’s handy for artists or genres you’re not very familiar with. There’s also ‘radio’ stations for each artist that plays you a mix of music their system considers similar to the artist. I don’t know yet if it’s only based on genre categories or if there’s something more advanced going on behind the scenes. I also don’t know if they track which songs you skip to tailor it more to your own tastes or not. It seems likely they’re at least thinking about features like that if they’re not in there now. There’s a lot of potential.

I’m just finishing up a 30 day free trial and I think I’m going to sign up. It costs about the same as Netflix and though I like watching movies, I listen to music pretty much all the time. I’ll get way more value out of this.

I love riding a bicycle with no hands

I ride a bike to work and back most days and though it can be tedious some days, it’s still fun most of the time. I have this cruiser bike and I had thought it might not be possible to ride it with no hands after my initial experiments failed miserably. When I was a kid I was able to ride a 10 speed with no hands with not much effort. It turns out, though, that I just needed a bit of practice! I have now begun riding as much as possible with no hands. I can sometimes make it for several blocks down my street before a dangerous intersection makes it pretty vital to use my hands for my own safety. Schweeeet! I ride among cars pretty much every time I’m out so I have to be careful, but I’m getting better at it all the time.

PhotoBooth Phun

I had seen demos of PhotoBooth and knew pretty much how it worked but had never actually tried it out until this morning. It’s a crazy amount of fun! I’m pretty much an expert already, too. Take a look…

Things I learned on vacation

I’m back from my honeymoon and I learned a few things while away…

  • Beautiful tropical islands really are pretty breathtakingly beautiful.
  • Relaxing is very nice but can get old after awhile.
  • Reading books is fun and I should do it more often.
  • The English language seems to be as close to a universal language as exists in the world, as sad as that is.
  • The food where we live may just be the best in the world. We are generally at least a little disappointed everywhere else we go.
  • My French still sucks.
  • Taking a boat directly to and from the airport is pretty neat. Taking a helicopter directly between two hotels would be even neater (maybe next time).
  • Bathing with flower petals is cool but makes a big mess afterwards.
  • California-made wine is on restaurant menus even in French Polynesia. Crazy!

Now that I’m back in the real world it’s time to get back to all the things I was doing before I got all busy.

Off to the South Pacific

While I’ve been not updating this website I’ve gotten hitched and am now headed off to the wild and wooly South Pacific to celebrate my new status. I’m very much looking forward to spending entire days split between just gazing out into the beautiful scenery and gazing into my lover’s eyes.

I have been assured that all of the problems DreamHost has been experiencing as of late will be 100% resolved by the time I return!

See ya when I get back.

Slim Devices Transporter

I just found this today on the Slim Devices website. It’s a network digital music player called ‘Transporter‘. From the description it looks like it’s a beefed up version of their popular Squeezebox player. The Squeezeboxes cost about $250 to $300 each and this Transporter is $1999! It’s being targeted at audiophiles and it certainly sounds up to the task from the list of features. It won’t make your 128k mp3s sound any better but your library of FLAC files may sound better than ever before.

Kellogg’s goes Organic

While at the local Safeway super market the other day, I spotted this bastard product on the shelf. Our San Francisco Safeway has started carrying more and more organic products in the last year or two and they now have their own organic generic brand. I don’t know if that’s the case in all Safeways or just ours. It’s nice to see bigger markets getting involved in organic, and they’ll probably keep doing it now that they know they can basically mark their organic products up 50%.

Well, anyway… now Kellogg’s is making organic Rice Krispies and Raisin Bran! WTF? This might be a good thing but it might also be just another sign of the term ‘organic’ gradually becoming mostly meaningless. First Wal-Mart goes organic, and now Kellogg’s. Who next? Budweiser? Philip-Morris?

The world just gets weirder, don’t it?

(oh, and sorry it took me two weeks to update. I’m helping to plan a major event!)
